Who we help

Year-End Accounting for Small and Growing Businesses

Whether you need your first annual accounts or are switching accountants, ATA can review the company position and establish what work is needed.

  • Small and micro-entity limited companies
  • Owner-managed businesses and contractors
  • Companies with outstanding or incomplete bookkeeping
  • Businesses with employees, VAT or multiple bank accounts
  • Directors requiring connected tax and accounting support

What we’ll ask for

Depending on the engagement, we may request accounting software access or a trial balance, business bank statements, sales and purchase records, payroll and VAT summaries, loan statements, fixed-asset details and director transaction records.

Behind with your records? We can quote separately for bookkeeping catch-up or corrections before the final accounts are prepared.

Important dates

Year-End Accounts and Corporation Tax Deadlines

A company’s Companies House deadline, Corporation Tax payment date and CT600 filing date are distinct. Planning for all three reduces the risk of last-minute problems.

9 months
Annual accounts

Usual deadline for an established private limited company to file accounts after its financial year ends.

9 months + 1 day
Corporation Tax payment

Usual payment deadline after the relevant Corporation Tax accounting period ends.

12 months
CT600 filing

Usual deadline for filing the Company Tax Return after the Corporation Tax accounting period ends.

These are standard deadlines, not a calculation of your company’s exact due dates. First accounts, periods longer than 12 months and some other circumstances have different requirements. Larger companies may have different Corporation Tax payment rules.

What about accounts filing changes?

Companies House has announced further accounts reforms scheduled for April 2028, including software filing and additional profit-and-loss filing requirements for small companies and micro-entities, with an option not to publish those figures on the public register.

We monitor changes to filing rules when preparing company accounts. The correct treatment depends on your company and the reporting period.

Common questions

Year-End Accounts FAQs

Do all limited companies need annual accounts?

Generally, UK limited companies must prepare accounts and file with Companies House, including many dormant companies. The format depends on the company’s circumstances and applicable eligibility rules.

Are annual accounts and a CT600 the same thing?

No. Statutory accounts report the company’s financial position and performance. A CT600 is a Company Tax Return submitted to HMRC, normally supported by tax computations and accounts.

Can you prepare accounts if my bookkeeping is incomplete?

Often, yes, but missing records and unreconciled balances must be addressed first. Catch-up work is normally scoped and quoted separately.

Can ATA help with my company’s first year-end?

Yes. First financial periods can differ from Corporation Tax accounting periods, so we review the incorporation date and filing dates before agreeing the work.

Do I need an audit?

Many small companies qualify for audit exemption, but some entities do not. Eligibility and any shareholder or lender requirements need to be checked separately.

What happens if the accounts are filed late?

Companies House normally charges late filing penalties, with further consequences possible for continued non-compliance. Contact us early if your deadline is approaching or overdue.

Does your quote include bookkeeping and Corporation Tax?

The engagement quote will specify whether it includes bookkeeping corrections, annual accounts, CT600 filing and any other requested services. We do not assume all services are included in every fixed fee.
